Score International » Thirst No More

Water before passing through the filtration system.

By Nathan Jude

I couldn’t believe what I saw. The water was black. I told my church members to bring water from anywhere in the village and I would drink it. Felix, a tall, slender man walked toward me with a bottle so dirty my stomach turned at the sight. What was I thinking? Missions 101 – DON’T DRINK THE WATER. Now with the arrival of a SCORE team and SAWYER Water System filters for the church people in Los Fundos, I was breaking the basic of survival rules.

I began filtering the water just like fellow SCORE missionary, Sarah Liborio, had explained. On one end I poured in water from the community bathing hole, immediately it ran out of the tube clear! Now the taste test. Every villagers’ eye was on me to see if I would back out. I counted to three, opened wide and swallowed fast. “Muy bueno, very good,” I said in Spanish & the church busted in applause. Cheering was heard on the other side of the village.

In three days, North Oak Community Church from Kansas provided more than 300 purifiers in six villages to families who normally catch rain water or spend money they don’t have on bottles.

Days later I asked a young girl what she thought of the purifier. She said, “I can drink water now and it doesn’t make my stomach hurt.”

For $40, an entire family has the “luxury” of clean, drinkable water.
